Reading Graphs Like Stories

Lesson 4 of 10 · 7 min · Free, no account needed

What you will learn

  • A graph going up is increasing, going down is decreasing, flat is constant.
  • Read the value from the height and the speed from the steepness.
  • Steeper means faster. Flat means nothing is changing.

How the lesson goes

  1. Three things happened to this tub. The curtain hides it.

Read the line alone. Tap the graph where someone pulled the plug.

  2. Now you run the tub. Your levers draw the graph.

Fill it to the green line, hold it there 3 seconds, then empty it. The clock starts when you move a lever.

  3. Fast, then slow, then off. Draw it first.

The tap runs fast for 4 s, then slowly until 12 s, then it is turned off. Sketch the water level, then Play.

  4. Three words for every graph.

Going up is increasing: the water rises.

    Flat is constant: nothing changes.

Going down is decreasing: the water falls.

Read the value from the height. Read the speed from the steepness: steeper is faster.

  5. Match each tub clip to its graph.

Drag each clip up onto a graph, or tap a clip and then a graph.

  6. Game: Tub DJ.

Ride the levers so the blue line stays inside the green corridor. Three rounds, score by time inside.

  7. An AI model's error, epoch by epoch. When did it stop learning?

An epoch is one pass over the training data. Tap the part of the graph where learning stopped.

  8. A phone's charge over one day.

Slide the two pins along the line: one where the phone is fullest, one where it drains fastest.

  9. Tell your own tub's story.

Drag each label onto its part of the graph you drew with the levers.
